Color Me Rad 2012 vs Color Me Rad 2013

Color Me Rad 2013

If you are a regular reader, you know I love Color Me Rad. Walking a 5K is much more fun if you are getting colorful at the same time. I am serious. 3.1 miles does not seem like 3.1 miles when you are having color thrown on you.

Since I did Color Me Rad in October 2012 here in Knoxville and again in April 2013 here in Knoxville, I thought I would compare the two like when I compared Color Me Rad vs The Color Run.

Distance – 5K

Color Me Rad 2012 was 2.8 miles. Color Me Rad 2013 was right at 3.1 miles. If you are going to call yourself a 5K, you do need to get to at least 3 miles. Definitely Color Me Rad learned from the previous race. I do know some people got in a LOT more than 3.1 miles because they went through color stations twice or did the whole race twice. That’s how much fun Color Me Rad is – you want to keep going.

We waited in line to park for Color Me Rad 2012 for over 30 minutes. I think the area in which it was held and the number of people created our long wait. This year was at a different location and I got smarter and took a back way to the race and lucked out on a fabulous parking space. We also arrived ONE HOUR before our start time. Wait time – nothing. I do know that some people waited for quite a while. The race was over 9,000 people so that is to be expected. I loved the new location – Civic Coliseum.

At last year’s Color Me Rad we used the restrooms where we parked, which were nice enough but a little wait. This year they had TONS of port-a-potties and there were no lines. I was very pleased to see plenty of toilet paper AND hand sanitizer along with sink stations outside.

Color Amount

At both Color Me Rad races there have been 5 color stations – 3 powder and 2 liquid. I wish they threw more powder on you. The volunteers use their hands and more of it gets on the ground than on the people. Thinking there could be a better way to do this. Just not sure what it is. But, you can always go through color stations multiple times AND you get a free color bomb at the end of the race to use however you want. And if you look at my photos you can tell I was colorful by the time it ended.

The Boys

I cannot tell you how nice the staff at Color Me Rad is. They are so nice and easy to deal with at pickup – even with the endless long lines. The announcer at both Color Me Rads was hysterical. Really kept the crowd energized.

Glenneth and Lisa 2013 After

Last year I bought quite a few items. This year I bought a white Color Me Rad tank top and a couple of pink bracelets (both to wear during the race). I own quite a bit of Color Me Rad items now. Love them all. The t-shirt material and hoodie material is the best.

I haven’t seen official photos yet, but I suspect they will be great. Color Me Rad hires out local photographers. I knew a few of them and they do fantastic work. In the meantime, I am sharing some of my photos with you. I will say I don’t carry my phone with me, but I carry an old point and shoot without any plastic covering. The color came right off my camera (and my Garmin).

Both races included a t-shirt, sunglasses, color packet, and RAD tattoo. They have the best t-shirts and I wore mine the next day to spectate at the Knoxville Marathon. The RAD tattoo is still slightly visible as is some of the color.

Which race did I prefer? 2012 or 2013? Would I do it again?

I would say I enjoyed this year’s better but ONLY because parking was easier and the weather was amazing (last year it was overcast and misting slightly). This year was truly a wonderful day to be outside. I hope that Knoxville has shown Color Me Rad the love and that they continue coming back again and again.

Have you done a color race? What did you think? What other types of “fun” races have you done? Share!

Enjoy your day!

  2. It looks like you really enjoyed yourself at the race and the improvements from the prior year were great! I am not sure I like the idea of having paint thrown at me. Guess I am just too old for one of these races!

  3. I signed up for the color vibe this year – it’s in a few weeks. I’m really excited for it, I’ve never done one before. I hope I look as colorful as you ๐Ÿ™‚
