Cold & Dark? Try These Workouts.

I wore a running skirt and a tank top to a 5K on Sunday. The weather was so beautiful – sunny and warm. Now the weather is definitely changing – temps will be below freezing before long (within hours here). With the cold weather and the dark evenings, you might be forced inside for your workouts. This could be the perfect time to try something new. Here are a few suggestions:

CrossFit – CrossFit has been sweeping the nation and there are boxes (their phrase for gym) popping up everywhere. I hear it is quite addictive and results are phenomenal. But, just like anything else, you get what you put in. CrossFit is definitely on my bucket list. It is a little on the pricey side, so ask for a membership for Christmas!


Spinning – If you love cycling, why not try a spinning class? No worries of cars and cold and you can get a great workout in.

Bike trainer – Another option if you love cycling is to invest in a bike trainer. Use your own bike in your own home and ride til your legs give out. I plan to pull my bike trainer out for the weekend and start enjoying my bike again.

Arc trainer – My new favorite piece of cardio at Planet Fitness. A cross between a treadmill, elliptical, and stair stepper, you can burn 600 calories or more an hour. This is a great machine for HIIT workouts.

Weights – I have rediscovered my love for strength training. Feel stronger, burn calories longer, and see definition in your muscles. You don’t even need to belong to a gym – do body weight exercises or buy some kettlebells or dumbbells for your house.


Yoga – With everything from Power Flow Yoga to restorative yoga, there is something for everyone. During the busy holiday season, why not try some restorative yoga to reduce the stress in your life. Finding a yoga class close to home and at a convenient time is something I am currently looking for. Even once a week would be great!

TRX – I tried a TRX class earlier this year and had a great time and got a great workout. So many different workouts you can do with those straps. Find a location near you that offers it or buy a kit for your house.

  2. I am going to get to a yoga class sometime this winter. I’ve never been to one, and I’ve been too chicken to just try one on my own. That seems lame now, so I’m going to make a change.

  3. I LOVE ARC trainers…. I wish I had access to one regularly. That thing is killer! I didn’t know what it was the first time I used one, thought it was a simple elliptical. That thing kicked my butt 🙂

    • it is definitely a butt kicking machine! love all the different ways you can adjust an arc trainer.
