Building Blocks for Africa 5K

Another Saturday morning, another race. Last year I did the 1 mile fun walk part of this race. This year I decided to walk the 5K, and of course, now I am training to run.

Beautiful morning for a race. Crisp, cool, and sunshine. Could not ask for more. When the gun went off, I started walking. Everyone else, and I do mean everyone, started running. I just kept to my pace and my plan. From the beginning to mile 1, I was in last, but I was also the only one walking. At mile 1 I passed a jogger.

My plan was then to run sections of the race, followed by walks. While I have a program to follow (#5kin100days), I decided to kind of do my own thing today. I would get motivated and run fast with long strides, then stop to walk some. I maybe did that 3-4 times between miles 1 and 2 and 3-4 times between miles 2 and 3.

At mile 3, I could see the finish line and I actually decided to run it in. My official time was 48:35 and a 15:40 pace. I was second to last, but I finished and I finished RUNNING. A first for me!

This running is going to take me a while to get the hang of. I did decide that longer, faster strides feel more natural to me.

I am enjoying my new Nikon Coolpix S8200 camera. Here are a few pictures I took this morning before the race.

Hope you are enjoying this beautiful weekend!

  1. I was second last in my first 5K. It was a nice feeling not to be last. Just remember that you are doing better than all the others who didn’t enter the race.
