Relax and Reduce Stress

Stress is bad for our bodies. It can cause all kinds of symptoms – that manifest differently in each of us. Physical symptoms of stress can include:

  • Low energy
  • Headaches
  • Upset stomach, including diarrhea, constipation and nausea
  • Aches, pains, and tense muscles
  • Chest pain and rapid heartbeat
  • Insomnia
  • Frequent colds and infections
  • Loss of sexual desire and/or ability

None of those sound fun do they? I am sure we all know people that seem to go, go, go and then are down sick for a week (or more) suddenly. Typically they have “stressed themselves out” and this is their body’s way of telling them to slow down and rest.

Everyone relaxes differently, so you need to make a list of what relaxes you and leaves you feeling rejuvenated. These items can also include self-care. Some you might consider:

  • Massage (even a 10 minute massage can be helpful)
  • Manicure or Pedicure
  • Reading a book by the fireplace
  • Meditation or yoga
  • Regular hair cuts and color
  • Phone/Skype/Facetime a friend
  • Take a nap
  • Bubble bath
  • Nature walk

Make sure to schedule some YOU time every single day!

  1. I know I yammered about this last week but for me realizing very existence of secondhand stress has been life-changing.
I know how to handle it now

  2. This is exactly why I run! I can’t always get free time to relax with a book or with a massage since I have two very needy kiddos. But I can always wake up early and log a 10k before the family wakes up and that’s what keeps me sane.

  3. I absolutely love bubble baths but don’t take them often enough. I also really like to get some vitamin d by walking in the sun when I’m needing to destress.
