As you may know, I love walking 5Ks. I especially love 5Ks that are for a great cause. When my friend M said her friend Kate was throwing a 5K to raise money to help find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, I asked Kate to do a guest post for my blog. Here we go:
Put on your running/walking shoes and join us on April 21st for the First Annual Sprint For Seth. All proceeds from this event will go to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy to fund research to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Duchenne is the leading fatal genetic disorder in children.
I first became involved with the fight against Duchenne about nine months ago. My dear friends Tammy and Chris Cate’s six year old son, Seth, was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Out of the 20,000 children affected each year, 99% are male. Most children diagnosed with this disease become wheelchair-bound by the ages of 9-13 and we lose 2 young men every day.
Seth and my daughter Sarah are very good friends and share a close bond. One afternoon Seth asked me when he could take Sarah on their first date, because he said he was going to grow up and marry her. As a mom, I giggled and thought that was cute. (But my daughters never dating, ha-ha). I told him when they turned 27 he could ask her on a date. Two weeks later Seth was diagnosed and all I kept thinking was what if he didn’t make it to 27. What plans in life would he not get the chance to do? My heart was crushed and I was heart broken for my friends, but I decided that the one thing I could do was to get involved. I could help fight Duchenne. Ever since that day I have worked to organize fundraisers, to get as much information on the disease as I could, to become an advocate, and to help my friends in this fight.
Now’s your chance to help to. Grab your running shoes and join us on April 21st. We’ll start at 8:30a.m. with our 5k run. Not a runner? Come on out for our 3k family fun walk and kids day. We’ll have a bounce house and kids play area. There will be lots of prizes for the run and giveaways for everyone else.
Come join us! Together we can join forces to fight against this disease and someday end Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy!!!
Together we can give these kids a great today…and a greater tomorrow!!!
